Viktoria Tolstoy made a name for herself at the early age of 19 with the very successful CD Smile, Love and Spices. The critics and the public admired her singing and radiance. Despite her young age, she soon earned recognition in jazz circles. She has performed with many members of the Swedish jazz elite, Arne Domnerus, Putte Wickman and Svante Thuresson amongst others, and has been nicknamed "Monica Z's heir ". In 1997, she had the honour of being the first Swedish artist to record for the classical jazz label Blue Note. The record White Russian, produced by the pianist Esbjörn Svensson who also took part with his trio, has received fine reviews and has reached a large public, with its jazz, blues and soul ingredients. Viktoria Tolstoy has also made several appearances internationally, including in Florence and in Bonn. 1994: Records the CD debut Smile, Love and Spices (EMI), praised by the critics and the public. 1995: Sings at the inauguration of the World Championship of Athletics. 1996: Makes her second record Too Loved (EMI), which is in Swedish and more pop-oriented. It becomes a big seller and successful in radio-listings etc. She is given much attention on the radio and on TV. She sings and tours frequently. 1997: Goes back to jazz with the CD White Russian, in collaboration with the Esbjörn Svensson Trio. She writes the songs with Esbjörn who is also the producer. Famous guest artists included Jojje Wadenius (guitar and song) and Nils Landgren (trombone). She also performs with the legendary pianist and composer McCoy Tyner.
